The Pros and Cons<\/span><\/h2>\n

To live on-campus or to find your own apartment, that is the question. Let\u2019s look at the advantages and disadvantages of both. You\u2019ll need to consider what is best for you. Living off-campus can be perfect for some, and not as great for others.<\/span><\/p>\n

Off-Campus Pros<\/span><\/h3>\n

Commuter Programs<\/span><\/h4>\n

Living off-campus isn\u2019t necessarily a bad thing. Colleges like the University of Houston offer commuter assistant programs that allow commuters to stay connected to campus, even if they live far away. Moreover, commuters still have the choice to pick meal plans thanks to certain commuter meal plan packages.<\/span><\/p>\n

Avoid Logistical Chaos<\/span><\/h4>\n

When living off-grounds, you get to miss fire drills, the move-in process, and having an RA. Additionally, some students aren\u2019t allowed to stay on campus during breaks, which can be inconvenient for students that live far away.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Off-Campus Cons<\/span><\/h3>\n

The Commute<\/span><\/h4>\n

This can take a toll on students, especially if you take morning classes. And even when you think you have made it to school on time you still have to factor in the time it takes to find a parking spot. You will spend more time in your car living off-campus.<\/span><\/p>\n

Missed Opportunities<\/span><\/h4>\n

Because your life is not centered on campus, there will be events that go on during the times that you aren\u2019t on campus. You\u2019ll feel less a part of the campus community, and this is not ideal for many.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On-Campus Pros<\/span><\/h3>\n

Sleeping In<\/span><\/h4>\n

There are a couple advantages to living on-campus, the first being your ability to snooze longer. For those of us who take morning classes, we know what difference five more minutes of sleep can have. You won\u2019t want to waste your precious time in the morning sitting in your car in traffic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Housing Resources<\/span><\/h4>\n

Your RA (Resident Advisor\/Assistant), Hall Council, Desk Assistants, and other support staff exist to make your college experience easier. Residential Life will often host events specifically for residents to enjoy themselves. Res life is there to help facilitate the connections you make in college. They are there to get students engaged, provide a learning environment and foster student success. This is a major benefit for incoming students.<\/span><\/p>\n

On-Campus Cons<\/span><\/h3>\n

Roommates\/Other Residents<\/span><\/h4>\n

The roommate situation can get tricky if there is no communication. Roommates can become problematic as well as other residents, but only if not dealt with properly. In order to keep from having roommate issues like cleanliness, noisiness, etc. you need to talk with them and\/or your RA to resolve the issue.<\/span><\/p>\n

Overall Living on campus allows students to be fully immersed in campus culture. You will always know about events and make much easier connections with people and organizations.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
